THE AMAZING WORLD OF DOGs!!!
THE
AMAZING WORLD OF DOGS!!!
Welcome to Tales by Olola. A page,
where we top up our knowledge on issues of life and I remain your loyal host, Olabusola Olorunnowo.
It will amaze you
that the journey of life is best traveled with a dog(s) because dogs are known
to be MAN's most trusted friend. Dog, mammal is
generally considered to be the first domesticated animal. This trusted
work/ walk partner and beloved pet learned to live with humans more than 14,000
years ago.
Dogs are a direct descendant of the wolves that once roamed Europe,
Asia, and North America, the domestic dog belongs to the dog family, which
includes wolves, coyotes, foxes, and jackals. Dog ancestry has been traced to
small, civet-like mammals, called miacis, which had short legs and a long body
and lived approximately 40 million years ago.
Dogs in a man’s
world play extremely vital roles which include: safety,
companionship and longevity of life. They are the playful companions when you
are in the mood for fun, Loving and therapeutic when you are lonely or
depressed, Health- giving when they spur you into taking long walks and body
guards when intruders invade your home, just to mention a few of the great
benefits of owning a dog...
I engaged in a conversation with a young
man who has often times contributed on some topical discussions on Tales by
Ololaa’s Blog. He goes by the name Olatunji Obisanya {TJ PROUDLY KING}. He is a
Dog Consultant, Care provider and a Veterinary. Here is what he has to tell us
about Dogs.
Some
interesting questions people often ask me about dogs with my profound answers
to them are:
(1)
What do u do when u sight a dangerous
dog?
»»» A dangerous dog is
basically known to be a bad dog and they is no such thing as bad dog but bad
owner. However, when you sight a dangerous dog, all you need to do is to
avoid such a dog by moving away from his path or territory without running
because if you run, the dog will chase you and may injure you badly. Another
option is to you pick up a self defense mechanism just in case the dog comes
after u.
(2) What are the things to look for when getting a puppy dog?
»»» Getting a puppy dog
requires some level of knowledge and understanding in order to avoid any
eventuality or loss of the dog or
the money expended on the purchase. Also when adopting a puppy,
wait until it is at least eight weeks of age before separating it from its
mother. Although the various breeds and dogs in general, have different
temperaments, look for a clean puppy that is happy, outgoing, and alert.
Other things to note when buying
a puppy are:
(A) Choose the puppy that
first comes to you. Check if it is of the desired sex.
(B) Carry the puppy
without the puppy showing fear or aggression.
(C)
The
puppy should look healthy and clean
(D) There should be no
signs of discharge from d eyes or nostrils
The
ears should be spotless inside and the teeth should be sharp and white.
(3) What are the best kinds of dogs to breed?
The decision to adopt
a dog should be made carefully because it is a serious commitment that can last
for several years. Small dogs may live 12 or more years, although very large
dogs typically have a shorter lifespan, sometimes as brief as 8 years.
»»» Choosing a puppy dog to breed
is similar to choosing a spouse.
It is important that you understand your personality and your dog's
personality types in order to make the right match for breeding. Do a research
on Dog types. Speak with a Vet Doctor to guide you. Why do you need a dog&
what are the capacities you want that Dog to posses. Answers to these questions
would help you in choosing a dog. You may need to know dog types which are:
“Type A”
humans are generally impatient with their time, highly competitive, stressed
and driven by ambition. These people are usually happier when they are calm.
Type B dogs suits these set of people
(although some” type A” humans also do well with “type A” dogs).
“Type B” humans, on the other
hand, are "laid-back", easy going and able to work at a reasonable
pace. Few “Type A” Dogs (for “Type B”
Humans) are Dalmatian, Siberian husky and Yorkshire Terrier. While Few “Type B”
dogs (for “Type A” Humans) are Bull dog, Great Dane and Saint Bernard.
(4) What are the things people need not
do to a dog?
»»» The heart of a man can be judge by his treatment of Animals. Here in
Nigeria, a lot of people abuse animals especially dogs unfortunately they get
away with this cruel act. It is pertinent to say that our knowledge of
expressing sincere love and tenderness towards domestic animals is a major
issue of concern. Coupled with the weak presence of animal right law in this
part of the world, people get away with lawlessness in all facet.
Few things you shouldn't do to a dog are:
(a) Never speak harshly to a dog, he won't
understand what you are saying, he would rather pick up on the tone of your
voice.
(b) Don't carry a dog by his
limbs. Always place your hands beneath his bottom and under his chest to best
support him.
(c) Never chase a friendly dog away from you,
if you do he will mark you as an enemy.
In conclusion, I would like to leave you
with some helpful pointers on knowing when to call the Veterinary Doctor.
Especially, when you notice some changes in your dog, hence you may need to be
more alert and observant. Some of the signs are:
(1) Loss of appetite or ravenous appetite
without weight gain
(2) Diarrhea or constipation
(3) Vomiting
(4) Discharge from the eyes, nose or mouth
(5)
Coughing
(6)
Pains, shivering or fever
(7) Unexplained restlessness
(8)
Sluggish movement
(9)
Constant hair loss
(10) Constant itchy skin.
(11)
Bloody loosed stool.
Once again, thank you for taking out time to
read Tales by Olola, today.
I will encourage
you to be a DOG lover and try to own one or more Dogs if you can, especially as
many as you can cater for. It is quite unfortunate that many people rear dogs
yet don’t take care of them as they ought. Before buying a dog, potential owners should examine
their lifestyle, living accommodations, and plans for the dog. Other decisions
should include who, in the case of a family, will care for the dog and whether
the family or individual owner will have enough time, attention, and money to
meet the dog’s needs. Also
Veterinarians recommend
that dogs of all ages have a yearly checkup, including vaccination booster
shots and screening for external and internal parasites. Since dogs cannot
communicate their health problems through words, the breeder has to help out.
My advice today is to
have them if you can care for them.
According to TJ “ if you rare dogs, you will live longer on an
average than those who don't have any dog at all”.
