3 UNHEALTHY REWARD APPROACH FOR CHILDREN

Image
"Reward the effort, not the achievement itself. Progress, not perfection ." Cynthia Crossley, Author at Habyts An English philosopher and social reformer, Jeremy Bentham introduced the "carrot and stick"   approach of motivation in people management. Which places emphasis on balancing how we can influence remarkable behaviour in people, children inclusive through reward and punishment systems. Literally, carrot, in this case, symbolizes the rewards while the stick indicates the punishment. Most parents and tutors often utilize the "carrot and stick" without knowing it. However, this article focuses on the health implications of some of the reward system or approach we put in place for children. 3 UNHEALTHY REWARDS APPROACH FOR CHILDREN Candy Reward Many of us are guilty of this, I inclusive. We often reward our children when impressed and sometimes our rewards may include ice cream, snacks, sweets, biscuits among other things. You w

HOW TO TEACH A CHILD THE BENEFIT OF VOLUNTEERING

Image
Many children grow up with the ownership mindset and this makes them seek for what the government and society will do for them rather than what should be their contribution to society. Many youths today find it had to be selfless or engage in volunteer service due to their childhood experience. The inability to volunteer or be committed to meeting the needs of others is the bane of corruption and social decadence. The best time to start is now. Children need to be enlightened about the need to be less self-focused and more others-focused. VALUES CHILDREN NEED TO KNOW  1.  MAKE THEM RESPONSIBLE FOR OTHERS:  Parent needs to consciously inculcate in children the need to look out for others.  2.   INFUSE VOLUNTEERING IN THEIR VACATION  A parent once told me how a visit to Modupe Cole changed the life of her teenage son, who had always believed that he was entitled to the many pleasant things he enjoyed.  Parents are often eager to send the

HOW TO TEACH A TODDLER HOW PARENTS EARN MONEY

Image
Children often feel bad when they approach us, as parents for something they want to buy and we tell them there is no money or we can't buy it now. To some of them: " Daddy don't just want to buy it " or " mummy is just being difficult ".  It forms a bad pattern when children get used to the culture of " there is no money", "No you can not have it", "We can not buy it now", "Stop wasting my money", "Monies are not plucked on trees", "do you think I steal money" and much more. Many children make a request because they know and believe it is Daddy and mummy's responsibility to provide everything and whenever this fails to happen, they feel less loved. It might be just best to enlighten them about how people earn money or income and how money circulates. When children are made to understand how salaries are being paid then they would be more considerate rather than being wasteful or un

7 TIPS ON MANAGING YOUR INCOME

7 TIPS ON MANAGING YOUR INCOME Do you know how it feels when you are tired and weak, and now you have a headache, not due to fatigue but due to the fact that the calendar reads 28 th and you have calculated your salary the umpteenth time yet your budget weighs more than your salary. Trust me, I know what it feels like when you suddenly think your salary is not enough at the point you get the alert. It is quite ironic to feel sad and overwhelmed the moments you receive your monthly salary rather feel grateful. Elizabeth Warren opines that “ Balancing your money is the key to having enough ”.   Sometimes most of our financial challenges are tied to our inability to manage our income per time. Here are a few tips: 7 TIPS ON MANAGING YOUR INCOME 1. COMMIT YOURSELF TO BE DEBT FREE : You need to set a standard for yourself else every month, you would be paying a debt. Agree with yourself that you will not borrow, no matter what arises. Have noticed that every time you

The Lady Painter

Image
T H E   L A D Y P A I N T E R A painter was needed at Thompson Nola street near Canada Villa, Lekki. Lagos. All effort to get a painter to quickly paint the enclosed hall proved abortive yet there wasn't time left for more search.  This part of the job was delaying other artisans. Rather than allow the work to linger for another 5days, a young woman stepped in relentlessly in her effort to ensure the work was completed in due time.  She was on board for supervision as she came in earlier with the project manager, Mr Richard but felt the time was of the essence. A few minutes later, the workers were stunned to see the young damsel who had earlier looked classy in her lovely expensive wig and makeup, did away with her 6 inches shoes to get the painting off the road, so the ceramics and sculptural design could commence. In no time she was up and down the building and the job was done. The project manager was overwhelmed and had to request that she assist him in the nex

DADDY IN THE KITCHEN

Image
DADDY IN THE KITCHEN Happy Father’s day to all fathers, fathers to be and men who are beacons of hope to the young generations and the world at large. A young man surprised a group of men by challenging them to give their families a weekend treat and then return with the stories of how the weekend went down. What a task? You would say, well it sounded so simple yet interesting. Like a game, they all resumed their daily activities but when the said weekend came; everyone had different fun stories, excuses and all to say but it will amaze you that a young man in the person of Ayorinde Adegoke Orija, a civil servant from Egba land, who had been married for about 10 years and knew how to spoil a family stunned the men’s forum with his weekend report. Dark and gentle Mr Ayorinde Adegoke Orija, had gone the extra mile of making a meal for his family, thereby treating his wife and children to a beautiful, delicate and delicious table of Akara.

Depression and Reward System For Intentional Parenting.

Image
Depression and Reward System For Intentional Parenting You will agree with me that parenting is never an easy task, no matter the support systems put in place. However, the two situations struck me recently. I had a conversation with Mr Andrea, a parent who mentioned his daughter Jane, engaged in the just concluded Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB). He was devastated when he heard her score: 235 . His grievance was that she is in the same school that tutored the best student in 2019 JAMB: the Boy had 386 yet his own daughter Jane could bearly make a good grade. According to him after his outburst, he checked online and realised that results were generally not excellent this year hence he had a relieve that Jane had tried. At this point I stepped in and asked: Sir, so what did you say to her afterwards?  Mr Andrea: Well, nothing. We need to proceed with the admission process.  Now his response felt like hot water poured on my skin. I felt terribl

HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY

Image
HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY May 29th, has always been our democracy day but the Federal Government sought to have a new date (June 12) in honour of MKO, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, the Presidential winner of 1993 June 12 Elections.  Hence 2019 will avail Nigerians two democracy holidays. Yippee! I am so such employers as already angry at the development well, it is not my rule dear. In the spirit of peace and tranquillity, we wish Nigeria more progressive years ahead. HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY

Motivational Monday

Image
Here is to encourage my readers, especially the women folks to let that fire keep burning. My apologies, if my post focuses on the women folks... Sometimes it is just necessary. You know...Lol! It is amazing how the obstacles, challenges and excuses increase by the day. For every success comes a series of failure and discouragement and the only way to keep on moving on, is to " Let them see your fire".  Let them see your passion. Let them see your interest, integrity, commitment to succeed and your delight to grow through each phase, knowing that you will only come out brighter. Thank you. This from Olabusola to you. Much Love.

HAPPY EASTER

Image
HAPPY EASTER! Happy Easter to you. It is indeed a beautiful season. Need I mention that Easter season is that season when we celebrate the essence of Christ: the death and resurrection of Christ. Easter season is that season that reminds us of our salvation, our Saviour , the price Christ Jesus paid on our behalf and the new covenant with Christ. Easter is also that season that reminds us of our new life in Christ and the beauty of our fellowship which is free from dependence on any human intermediary: no more need for the blood sacrifice, High priest duties and prophets to make propitiation for our sins. Instead, we are now one with Christ Jesus, through his redemption and our sins forgiven through his death on the cross. We then, have become Ambassadors of Christ through faith to all around us. For death could not hold him captive, even in the grave Jesus is Lord. Happy Easter to you all.
